What To Do If Boat Repair Is More Than Cost Of Boat

The toll to supervene upon the transom on a boat will vary greatly depending on whether you pay someone to do it, or if you do information technology yourself.  Later some research I came beyond prices equally high as $5,000 to take it washed professionally, but I'll show yous how I was able to do information technology myself for virtually $263.

In my previous commodity (and video) I gave the step-by-pace procedure that I took to completely rebuild the transom on my 23' fiberglass boat.

Simply in this article we are going to embrace what tools I used and how much it cost to do my transom. (My boat is a 1972 ss235 Slickcraft)

On the way abode when I bought it!

Tools You lot'll Need

Here is a listing of all the tools you'll demand to exercise this job.

  • Affluent Cut Saw or Angle Grinder
  • Handheld Chugalug Sander
  • Chisels and/or Modest Pry Bars
  • Skill Saw
  • Fiberglass rollers
  • Jig Saw
  • Engine Hoist (if your boat is an inboard)
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Hammer
  • Paintbrushes

And of grade various wrenches to remove the bolts and nuts and things attached to your transom.

I was fortunate plenty to take a forklift handy to remove my engine so I didn't need an engine hoist. But regardless what yous apply the engine has to come up off! Inboard or outboard.

Materials Yous'll Demand

Here is what I used. My transom across the back is approximately vii' across, and then you should be able to calculate a little and figure out what you need according to the size of your boat and transom.

  • 2 sheets of 1/two" Exterior Plywood
  • Approx. 3 gallons of Polyester Resin
  • Approx. 2-3 yards of Chopped Strand (50" width)
  • Approx. 3 yards of 1708 mat
  • 1- 2x4 eight feet long.
  • 2 bolts 5" long
  • 5200 to seal all holes in the transom

Now if you by chance replace the outer skin (hull) of your transom you volition need a lot more than than 3 yards of 1708. The hull should probably have most 5 to 7 layers of fiberglass instead of 1 or 2 similar the inside has.

Costs

  • 2 sheets of Plywood = $24 each at my local Lowes = $48
  • 3 Gallon of Polyester Resin = $42 each bachelor on Amazon = $126
  • 2 yards of Chopped Strand Mat = $24 for 3 yards on Amazon = $24
  • 3 yards of 1708 Mat = $9.40 per 1000 on Amazon =  $28
  • 2x4 at local Lowes = $4
  • 2 bolts with washers and nuts = $3
  • 5200 = $xxx on Amazon = $30

Total Cost for Materials; $263

Cost of Tools Y'all'll Demand to exercise your Transom

Here is the judge cost of the tools you'll need if you need to buy them.

  • Affluent Cut Saw = $58 on Amazon = $58
  • Handheld Belt Sander = $45 on Amazon = $45
  • Chisels and/or Small Pry Bars = $xx on Amazon = $20
  • Skill Saw = $53 on Amazon = $53
  • Fiberglass Rollers = $15 on Amazon = $15
  • Jig Saw = $30 on Amazon = $30
  • Hammer = $10 on Amazon = $10
  • Paintbrushes = $19 on Amazon for 10 pc set = $19
  • Engine Hoist = $219 on Amazon = $219

Total Cost of Tools; $469

At present you lot could possibly hire an engine hoist or borrow one like I did. I was fortunate enough to live right beside my father-in-constabulary's warehouse where he has a forklift.

Keep in mind that you probably won't need to buy all these tools if you already have them.

That's it!

For less than $800 and some work yous could completely replace the transom of your boat and be back on the water in no time!

Have fun, take care, and God Anoint!
